Running a padel league with a WhatsApp group
In short
A WhatsApp group is good for the social side of a club padel league: banter, quick questions and finding a stand-in. It is poor at fixtures, scores and the table, which get buried in the chat, and club news gets scrolled past. Keep the group for talking, and keep the league record somewhere every member sees the same table.
What the group is good for
- One place to reach everyone, on an app people already have. A group holds up to 1,024 members.
- Quick questions and stand-ins. “Anyone free Thursday at 7?” gets answered in minutes.
- Polls and events. WhatsApp has built in polls and event invites with replies, useful for a finals night.
- Pinned messages for the rules or the court booking details.
- The social side, which is half of why people join a league.
Where it breaks down
- Fixtures and scores get buried. A result posted on Monday is forty messages up by Wednesday.
- Somebody has to keep the table, usually by reading the chat and typing results into a spreadsheet.
- The same questions come round again: who do I play, by when, what was the score.
- Nobody confirms a score. One person posts it and silence is taken as agreement.
- The record leaves with the organiser if they step down.
A setup that works
- Keep one group per league, or a WhatsApp Community with one group per league and an announcements group only admins can post in.
- Pin the house rules and the link to the league table.
- Put fixtures, deadlines, scores and the table in one place outside the chat that everyone can open.
- Use the group to arrange matches and chat, not to record them.
- For junior leagues, follow your club’s safeguarding guidance on group chats.
How Padeliga does it
Padeliga is built to sit next to your WhatsApp group, not replace it. It has no chat of its own. A league can carry its group’s invite link, so members see a Join the WhatsApp group button, and only members of that league can see it.
If the league asks for phone numbers, every match has a one tap WhatsApp button that opens a chat with the other pair and the message already written: both pairs, the league and the date it has to be played by. The fixtures, scores and table live in the app, where both pairs confirm each score and everyone sees the same table.

Not in Padeliga. Numbers are only asked for if the league wants a WhatsApp button, only people in that league can see them, and staff never see them, on screen or in an export.
