Box league or ladder?
In short
A box league splits players into small groups of similar standard who all play each other by a deadline, then moves the top up and the bottom down. A ladder is one ranked list where you challenge people above you. Box leagues suit regular play and a clear finish; ladders suit casual players who want to choose when they play. For most clubs the box league is easier to run, because the fixtures run themselves once the boxes are set.
How a box league works
Players or pairs are split into small groups, the boxes, of roughly the same standard. Boxes of four to eight are common. Everyone plays everyone in their box over a set period, often four to six weeks. At the end, the top of each box move up and the bottom move down, usually one or two each, and the next round starts with new boxes. There is no official standard for box size or how many move: it is the organiser’s call.
Everyone knows who they play and by when, and everyone plays the same number of matches.
How a ladder works
A ladder is one ranked list. You challenge somebody a few places above you, often no more than three, and they have a set time to play, often two weeks. If you win you take their place, and the players in between move down one (some ladders simply swap the two). There are no fixed fixtures: the ladder runs as long as the organiser likes.
It is flexible, but it depends on people issuing and accepting challenges. It needs rules for how far up you can challenge, how quickly a challenge must be played and what happens when one is declined.

Which to choose
Choose a box league if you want everyone playing regularly, a clear finish and a fair comparison, because everyone plays the same opponents in their group. Choose a ladder if your players are casual, their availability is unpredictable and you are happy for some people to play far more than others.
For most club leagues the box league is the safer choice: nobody is left waiting for a challenge, and the fixtures run themselves once the boxes are set.
Starting a box league from nothing
The first round needs a way to fill the boxes. Seed them by level if players have one (see using Playtomic levels), or draw them at random and let two or three rounds of promotion and relegation sort people out.
How Padeliga does it
